Form 2290 Tax Brackets 2026 - 2027
Whether you are an owner operator or a fleet manager, you have to remain compliant with IRS regulations to ensure that your fleet keeps operating. In case your commercial vehicles weigh a gross taxable weight exceeding 55,000 pounds, you need to file form IRS 2290 annually.
The 2026–2027 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) periods begin on July 1, 2026, and end on June 30, 2027. Knowing how your fleet qualifies for Form 2290 tax brackets in 2026 ensures correct filling, saves you from potential penalties, and ensures that you obtain your stamped Schedule 1 quickly.
How Are Your Form 2290 Tax Brackets Determined?
There are three main pillars of computation by IRS:
- Taxable Gross Weight: The total unladen weight of your truck, trailer usually towed by your truck, and its load.
- Category of Your Vehicles: Normal commercial vehicles vs. dedicated logging vehicles (which qualify for lower taxes).
- Month of First Used: The specific calendar month within the year when the vehicle was first driven on the highways.
Your truck will not be charged any HVUT fees if it weighs less than 55,000 pounds.

Category W – Tax Suspended Heavy Vehicles
All heavy trucks registered and operational on our roads do not pay taxes; however, there are certain criteria you can apply to achieve a tax suspension depending on your vehicle's low-mileage performance from July to June:
- Commercial Vehicles: Used not more than 5000 miles annually.
- Agricultural Vehicles: Not used more than 7500 miles annually.
Remember that even if your truck satisfies the tax-suspension requirements, you are required to file Form 2290 for reporting purposes and obtaining a validated Schedule 1.
Important Filing Deadlines & IRS Requirements
For the standard operation cycle starting in July, your filing/payment deadline for heavy vehicles is August 31, 2026. However, if you decide to add new or old vehicles to the list during the same tax year, you should file them by the last day of the next month. Let us assume that a new truck will be added to the road in October 2026,
Important Information to Gather Before Filing
It is crucial that before accessing your IRS-authorized e-file account, you make sure you have gathered the following data:
- Employer Identification Number (EIN): The IRS won’t accept the filing if you use a SSN. Allow up to two weeks for newly issued EINs to become active in the IRS’ system.
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): Verify all 17 digits of each vehicle’s VIN. Errors here may cause problems in state registration or even require the submission of a formal amendment requesting correction.
- Taxable Gross Weight Group: Make sure each vehicle has been assigned the corresponding lettered group based on its gross weight.
Making Your Fleet Management Efficient with E-Filing
While electronic filing is mandatory for all fleets of 25 or more taxable vehicles reported to the IRS according to its strict rules, e-filing is strongly advised even if you own just one vehicle as a single operator. Thanks to e-filing, processing time decreases from weeks to mere minutes, and you get your watermarked Schedule 1 emailed to you right away to manage your renewals at the DMV.
With the correct tax brackets of Form 2290 for 2026 and pre-filing before August, your logistics company remains compliant.
