How to Make an IRS Appointment for Form 2290
Form 2290 is used to report and pay the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) for vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more that are operated upon public highways.
When You Might Need an Appointment
If any of the following applies to you, you might need an appointment with the IRS:
- You want to file Form 2290 in person.
- You require assistance in understanding your HVUT obligations.
- You have an urgent need for a stamped Schedule 1.
- You are making a paper payment and would like some help.
Option # 1: Call IRS to Make Appointment
To make an appointment at a local IRS office (called a Taxpayer Assistance Center or TAC):
- Call 844-545-5640, the IRS appointment line.
- Tell the representative your business is with Form 2290.
- Give the representative your location, and they will assist you in scheduling for the nearest available office.
- Make note of the time, location, and any items you are required to bring.
Option # 2: File or Pay Online (No Appointment Required)
You do not need to make an appointment with the IRS yourself if you file Form 2290 electronically. This is the fastest and easiest option.
Form 2290 can be filed online through an IRS-approved e-file provider (simpletrucktax.com). Upon filing, the user will receive a stamped Schedule 1 that serves as proof of payment.
Option # 3: Walk-In Service
Walk-In services may be rendered by limited IRS offices at certain times. Prior phoning for appointments is encouraged.
