New Truck, New Tax: Form 2290 Due Dates for Tax Year 2024-2025

Congratulations on your new heavy highway truck! As you get ready to place your new truck into service, it's important that you know your Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) responsibilities.

Since most truckers are aware of the August 31st annual deadline for the entire tax year, those trucks placed into service in or after July have a different deadline.

This is where prorated taxes enter the picture, and it is an important aspect of maintaining compliance with the IRS.

The 2024-2025 tax year is from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. For any new or used taxable truck with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more you place in service on a public road after July, your Form 2290 and tax payment are due on the last day of the month after the month your vehicle was "first put in use."

For instance, if you bought and first used a new vehicle during September 2024, your tax return would be due October 31, 2024. This proration method means you're only paying for those months the vehicle is actually in service for the tax year.

To prevent IRS penalties and interest payments, it's important to properly determine the first used month and submit your HVUT return timely. We simplify this with our e-filing. You'll require your Employer Identification Number (EIN), the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the new truck, and its taxable gross weight.

Our site will walk you through prorating the tax due, accurately. When you e-file, we provide your IRS-stamped Schedule 1 proof of payment in just a matter of seconds, often needed to register your vehicle in-state. Don't let paperwork hold you back—put your new truck on the road securely by e-filing your Form 2290 today.
