Indiana Trip Permit

The operation of a commercial vehicle from one state to another demands that stringent compliance be shown when it comes to registration and fuel tax requirements. Your fleet must be registered in the IRP or IFTA for you to move through the state of Indiana; otherwise, you need the Indiana Trip Permit.

Form 2290 Compliance

Operating a heavy vehicle? A trip permit buys you time, but if your truck is 55,000+ lbs, permanent DMV registration requires IRS Form 2290.

e-file your 2290 and receive your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes.

Do You Need an Indiana Trip Permit?

Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) Motor Carrier Services (MCS) needs temporary authority for vehicles without permanent interstate authority. The following conditions apply to you and you would require an Indiana trip permit if your vehicle is moving in an interstate manner:

  • Weight Limitations: Your vehicle has gross vehicle weight (GVW) or weight registered above 26,000 lbs.
  • Combined Load Limits: The gross or weight registered of your power unit and trailer combination is above 26,000 lbs.
  • Axle Type: Your power unit is set up with three or more axles irrespective of the weight.
  • Invalid Credentials: Your vehicle is not registered through the IRP program or does not have valid IFTA decals in the state where you are operating.
  • Tip: If you don’t have any IFTA credentials, it’s highly likely that you may require an Indiana Fuel Permit besides a trip permit. While the trip permit takes care of the registration aspect, the fuel permit addresses the motor fuel use tax issue.

Permit Validity and Requirements

When working in Indiana, make sure that all necessary papers are safely stored before you move into Indiana.

  • Validity Period for Trip Permit: Usually valid for 72 hours starting from the time when it starts being effective.
  • Validity Period for Fuel Permit: Usually valid for 5 days.
  • Permits Documentation: It is important to always carry a copy of the permit either in paper or electronic form in the cab.

How to Obtain Your Permits

Since Indiana requires electronic transactions for several motor carrier transactions, using official means to obtain permits is the quickest way to remain compliant.

  • Authorized Permit Services: Many motor carriers take the route of third party permit services to get both the Trip and Fuel permits. This is usually the most effective way to ensure that all information such as your VIN, plate number, and weight is entered accurately.
  • Information Required: Ensure you have the full Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) along with your registered weight, and travel dates when applying.
  • OSOW Loads: Please keep in mind that a Trip Permit will not be applicable for oversize or overweight loads. If your vehicle is over dimension standards (like 13'6" high and/or 8' 6" wide), then you should apply separately for OSOW loads.

I have been using Simple Truck Tax for six years now to file our yearly 2290. It is simple to use, and they file it quickly. I have a login, and it is easy to add and remove trucks. They remember my information, so I don't have to upload it again the following year. I definitely recommend their 2290 service.
