Massachusetts Trip Permit

If you drive a commercial vehicle without obtaining permanent IRP or IFTA certificates in Massachusetts, you need temporary permission to comply with the law. The Massachusetts Trip Permit gives you the legal right to drive your vehicle in the state, avoiding any delays, fines, or even impounding of your vehicle.

Form 2290 Compliance

Operating a heavy vehicle? A trip permit buys you time, but if your truck is 55,000+ lbs, permanent DMV registration requires IRS Form 2290.

e-file your 2290 and receive your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes.

When Do You Need a Massachusetts Trip Permit?

A trip permit is an authorization for temporary registration of trucks and buses which pass through Massachusetts and are not apportioned. It is recommended that you apply for this permit when your vehicle is engaged in interstate or intrastate commerce and fits into one of the below mentioned criteria:

  • Weight Thresholds: The GVW or the registered weight of your power unit exceeds 26,000 lbs.
  • Combination Vehicle: The total gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered weight of your power unit and the trailer is above 26,000 lbs.
  • Axle Number: Your power unit has a total number of three axles or more (counting the steer axle but not the trailer).

Tip for Compliance: The Registration Trip Permit is not a waiver of the fuel tax. In the absence of an active IFTA License, a Massachusetts Fuel Trip Permit needs to be issued in order to fulfill the fuel use tax requirement in Massachusetts.

Permit Validity and Requirements

It is important that when acting on an interim permit in Massachusetts, you need to prepare well because enforcement officers at the weigh stations or port of entry can demand your documents.

  • Validity: The regular IRP Trip Permit normally lasts for 72 hours.
  • Limits on Fuel Permit: You can have no more than three IFTA fuel permits in one calendar year.
  • Documentation: It is imperative that you have a hard or soft copy of the permit in the cab of your vehicle. Permits are vehicle specific and cannot be moved to another power unit.

How to Obtain Your Massachusetts Permit

The regulatory climate in Massachusetts favors compliance and therefore the permit services provide the fastest means of obtaining such documentation.

Authorized Permit Services:

Most truckers make use of permitted agencies that are able to assist them in the permitting process. They help in providing fast and electronic issuance of permits, and it is very important for your critical information such as VIN number, registered weight, and axles to be correct.

Information Required:

When you apply, make sure that you have the following:

  • Full Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • License plate number and issuing state
  • Gross vehicle weight registered
  • Specific dates and times of travel in Massachusetts
  • A Note on Oversize/Overweight (OSOW) Loads

It should be noted that a regular permit for registration trips does not allow to transport oversize and overweight loads. In case the dimensions of your vehicle exceed the legal requirements for Massachusetts vehicles (i.e., gross vehicle weight greater than 80,000 lbs, height more than 13'6" or width greater than 8'6"), an OSOW permit is required.

The assistance provided was beyond expectations. This was my first time doing it, and their support stayed with me until everything was completed. It took me longer because I was multitasking and they waited whileI was getting other things done. Thank you! The best service I have ever received from any phone support.

I have been using Simple Truck Tax for six years now to file our yearly 2290. It is simple to use, and they file it quickly. I have a login, and it is easy to add and remove trucks. They remember my information, so I don't have to upload it again the following year. I definitely recommend their 2290 service.
