IRS Form 2290: What's the Due Date for 2025

Understanding IRS Form 2290 for Heavy Highway Vehicles

If you drive heavy vehicles that are 55,000 pounds or more, you need to fill out IRS Form 2290, which means you have a tax liability to the U.S. The Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return is a tax form that a person must submit to the IRS annually to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) as well as to report such tax.

Whether you're an owner-operator, fleet manager, or trucking business owner, staying on top of the due dates is critical to avoid penalties.

What Is the IRS Form 2290 Due Date for 2025?

The 2025-2026 tax year is the due date for the IRS Form 2290, which is September 2, 2025. The HVUT tax period runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026, and the regular filing date is August 31. However, as August 31st is a Sunday in 2025, the IRS has extended the date to the next business day, Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Who Needs to File Form 2290?

Anyone who registers a heavy vehicle of which the taxable gross weight is at least 55,000 pounds in their name has to fill out IRS Form 2290. This comprises truck owners, companies with big fleets, and even limited-use highway vehicles with farm plates.

You will still need to file a Form 2290 even if your truck qualifies for suspension (under 5,000 miles annually) to claim your exemption.

Penalties for Missing the Filing Deadline

If you forget the final date to submit Form 2290, the penalties are severe. If you fail to meet the deadline, the IRS may impose a charge of 4.5% of the total tax due, compounded every month for a period of up to five months. In addition, late payment penalties accrue at a rate of 0.5% per month.

Moreover, an interest rate is set. If you file your returns on time, your DMV vehicle registration won't be affected by missing a payment for HVUT.

The fastest and simplest method to file your Form 2290 is using an IRS-approved electronic filing service on the internet. By using the e-filing method, you are able to immediately transfer the form to the IRS, make a digital payment, and have a stamped Schedule 1 receipt within minutes.

Prior to filing, truck drivers should prepare their EIN, vehicle information, and mileage details.

To be fully prepared, submit your payment early and prevent problems by not being involved in the tax year.
